How SHIFT Fits the Game Jam Theme
SPOILERS AHEAD - PLAY THE GAME FIRST
Time Theme
SHIFT was created with some obvious inspiration from Valve's Portal games. However, with some drastically different mechanics relating to time. Once you pick up the Time Shift watch, you can shift time from the present to the past and back again. The present, everything is decaying and broken. In the past, everything is working and in place. I didn't want to put much of this description in the game page itself as I wanted players to figure it out. This is how the game fits the "Time" theme of the Game Jam. There is more ideas of how to use the time shift mechanic to affect the present if you change the past, etc, but that's for another time.
Trickery Theme - April Fools
The "trickery" may be fairly subtle in this game, but basically when you FIRST use the Time Shift watch, I used JavaScript plugins in WebGL to alert the player with a fake error about their system time. "pausing" or "crashing" the game and it starts to "sync" the system time again. You then go on and play through the levels, getting to a control room where you start in the past again. The only way out is to dispose of the watch, which in turn ends you up right back at the room where you first collect the watch. You are stuck in an endless loop. So, fake crashes, endless loop that appears to be what you are suppose to do to get out.
The story is initially about a lab that has created this device and it causes issues, they get stuck in a time loop and need to get out. For the demo and some gameplay concepts, I've left it at that with only 6 "levels".
Thanks for reading if you got this far!
Thanks for playing.
